Knowing How Rim Locks Work

Rim locks are locking devices that attach to the surface of the door.  Rim locks existed for centuries already.  In fact, they were one of the earliest styles of security used for securing castles and the homes of England and Europe nobles.  These rim locks were brought to the United States where they were imported up until the mid-1800. Around 1830, local production began in the United States.   In the present times, most rim locks are used on exterior doors in the British Isles.  Actually, rim locks have plenty of uses.  In the first place it can provide you with total security.

If you ant to open the door from the inside you are going to turn the latch.  However, if you want to open the door from the outside, just use a key.  By latching shut as you leave, the door will lock automatically.  Accordingly, rim locks are spring loaded locks with the latch on the inside holding open the lock when it is turned.  One disadvantage is that, even a credit card can open the door which might be done by anyone.

To ensure security, rim locks must be used in conjunction with another type of lock such as deadbolt lock.  These types of locks are sometimes described as auxiliary locks.  They also appear elegant and decorative. Many replicated locks are available online that feature incredibly delicate designs and crafting.  Their designs are often based from the 13th or 14th centuries. Replicated Victorian rim locks are also very famous.  You can see them in old style houses as they added a lot of class and style.  The charm it gives cannot be matched by any other lock styles.
